Il peplum diventa cos? uno dei generi quantitativamente pi? rilevanti della produzione del cinema italiano. Per descrivere la fortuna ondivaga di queste produzioni viene spesso utilizzata la metafora del fiume carsico, ma il peplum si rivela essere un campo di tensioni che attraversano con intensit? variabile l’intera storia del cinema, modulandosi in forma diversa a seconda delle epoche e delle necessit?. Esso diviene di volta in volta veicolo di promozione culturale del mezzo cinematografico, luogo di mediazione tra le istanze della societ? dei consumi e le radici della cultura nazionale, oppure scenario metaforico in cui ambientare satire del costume contemporaneo. Comment expliquer qu’un terme voisin, cantus, soit ? l’origine de la notion de ≪ chant ≫ ? O? se situe la rupture entre deux mots pourtant issus d’un m?me verbe : canere ? Notre ?tude, qui se veut globale, se propose d’analyser la dimension non seulement acoustique mais ?galement pragmatique du terme carmen. Nous montrons qu’il ne s’agit pas seulement d’une cat?gorie sonore : il renvoie ? un acte porteur de contraintes. Notre premier chapitre aborde les emplois de carmen associ? ? trois types de sujets ? oiseaux, instruments, cantores ? et montre l’existence de deux p?les : parall?lement ? l’emploi du terme, renvoyant ? des chants ou ? des musiques, sur le mod?le grec du melos, nous analysons un sens indig?ne qui renvoie ? une s?miologie contraignante, celle des signaux des trompes ou des auspices. Cette dimension pragmatique oriente la suite de notre analyse : dans les chapitres deux et trois qui traitent les emplois du terme dans le domaine du droit et de la religion, nous montrons que le mot carmen, d?signant d’abord des incantations, est r?employ? de fa?on nouvelle au d?but de l’Empire pour d?signer toutes sortes d’actes o? la parole, employ?e en formule autonome, suscite des effets contraignants : pri?res, lois ou serments.
